I wrote this song last year for a teachers retreat where I sang. I had a couple of specific students in mind when I wrote it, and I hope that I can be an influence on them this school year. It's a tough and often thankless job, but teachers are some of the most important people around.
It’s 8 AM on Monday morning and I’m heading off to school
And already I’ve been yelled at, been made fun of, called a fool
And I don’t know how I will act this morning
But please love me
I may not understand the lesson even after seven tries
And I may stare out of the window with a blank look in my eyes
But my one request that I don’t know quite how to verbalize
Please love me
Cause you have the influence and you have made a difference
And I don’t quite know how to say thanks
So I’ll just give you one last hug before I leave the room to catch the bus
And hope that I’ll be in your prayers tonight
I’m coming back again on Tuesday, last night really wasn’t good
I didn’t finish all my homework or do my reading like I should
But teacher you don’t even know the things that I saw in my home
And what I went through
So before you do the rollcall and the worksheets get passed out
And before the Pledge Allegiance even comes across my mouth
I need you just to grab my hand and look me in the eye
And say I’m somebody

I know the apple’s a little overripe and it may not be that sweet
But I hope you like it anyway
And no I don’t read or write that well but the picture sums up what I want to say
